Impact Measurement Plan
What is this for?
If you’re not actively thinking about tracking and measuring how things are going with your culture, how can you know what to prioritise and where to focus?
Keeping on top of how things are going also means you’re far more likely to catch any problems before they get too big to manage.
We’re talking specifically about measuring how things are going in your organisational EDI journey. It’s also going to be important to regularly examine the impact of the work you do on society as a whole but that’s not the focus of this resource.
5 key elements of good impact measurement:
Need baseline data to measure progress - start as early as possible
You need to update your understanding and data regularly and know how to ask the right questions at the right time
Need to balance detail/anonymity - the more you know about the experiences of particular groups, the more you can address the problems in a way that drives impact but this should never be at the expense of personal privacy
You need a holistic approach, gathering as much data as possible in order to have as full a picture as possible - recruitment, retention, advancement, pay scale. Data relating to how people are behaving and data relation to how people are feeling.
You need to do something with the evidence you gather - can’t keep asking people to provide information and input without any clear benefit or reason for it
Sometimes you’ll need to go back and ask some more questions. Data can sometime provide conclusive answers but sometimes it highlights areas that need more exploration. Don’t be afraid to investigate further, perhaps with some follow up questions or perhaps by getting someone external to come and do some anonymous qualitative research.

Take a look at the EDI journey map. You’ll see some suggestions for impact measurement along the way. These are only suggestions though so you may be able to capture insights earlier or in another way.
