Belonging, hybrid working, and inequality

The pandemic has had a huge impact on the way we work and it’s also shifted how we think about belonging at work. What hasn’t changed, is the importance of feeling like you belong at work

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for many people. A survey of over 12,500 American-based workers in 2018, found that over a quarter didn’t feel like they belong in their workplace.

Employees that are part of underrepresented groups are already struggling to get an equal amount of development time, attention and credit for their work. Is this made worse when they are not physically in the office?

Many employees that are part of outgroups find hybrid and remote working beneficial, but there are downsides and risks. Organisations run the risk of increasing inequity if they are not thinking intentionally about how to prevent it.
